French at Crossways

At Crossways, children in Years 5 and 6 get an hour long French lesson every week. This term....ez Le Docteur

Crossways Junior School in Thornbury continue their Year 6 French Programme with a unit on 'Chez Le Docteur'.

Children begin by learning parts of the body with 'Simon Dit 'e.g. 'Simon dit touchez la tete?' They then go on to learn how to describe common ailments and their symptoms with flash card games, mime and bandages !!! They love it. At this stage learning is reinforced with song --'La tete les epaules les genoux les doit de pieds' and 'Chez le docteur' from 'le Club Francasi' tapes both being very appropriate.

Once familiar with the vocabulary they then develop their own role plays. Yes,year 6 children still love to play doctors and nurses !!! Receptionists also take the useful role of checking in patients - thus reinforcing previous learning about name .age address etc.

The pictures were taken during an assembly to the whole school to demonstrate their new language skills. They wore white coats, used stethoscopes and bandages and administered pills and looked like very competent members of the medical profession. They also performed their 2 songs and took part very competitively in 'Simon dit'. Never have 65 Year 6 children concentrated so hard on following instructions correctly !!!

The opportunity to perform their French skills to an audience gave the unit a real purpose and produced confident motivated French speakers. It also enthused the younger children and demonstrated that learning a foreign language can be great fun !!!
