7 Feb 2008 - Y6 Football: Crossways vs St Michael's (Stoke Gifford)
Crossways Y6 footy team finally got to play their away fixture against St Michael's on Thursday night. The team were confident, but there was a slight hint of nervousness too, as this was their first league match of the season.
The match got underway and from the off Crossways looked dangerous. The quick pass and move play caught St Michael's by surprise and several corners were forced in succession. Marcus' pin-point delivery caused all sorts of problems for the home defence- their goalkeeper pulled off a couple of great saves, before Jack finally headed (nosed!) home the first.
The Crossways pressure continued, with Toby heading against a post and more good saves from the home 'keeper. The pressure paid off with Marcus finishing clinically after a good move. Marcus then added his second a few minutes later; after a good run down the line. He cut inside and unleashed a piledriver into the roof of the net.
Jack and Toby worked tirelessly in midfield, breaking down the St Michael's moves before they had a chance to get going. Hayden, Jack W and Alex had time for several cups of tea and a game of cards.
The half came to a close. The boys were tired but happy with the performance so far. The whistle went for the second half and within a few seconds, Crossways broke away and Marcus completed his hat-trick. Sam's trickery on the wings was really paying off.
St Michael's were gaining more and more possession as the Crossways team began to tire. Hayden kept a cool head and defended sensibly, while Jack W made some towering clearances. Alex, as usual, looked very solid in goal, making several saves.
Ewan, Stephen and Ben came off the bench and picked up where the others had left off. Ewan and Stephen defended stoutly as the home side desperately tried to get a consolation goal. Ben's electrifying pace caused the home defence problems on the break.
However, it was Crossways who scored the next goal- Jack , wrong-footing the 'keeper, coolly slotted home for his second. St Michael's continued to press, but couldn't get past the commanding Crossways 'keeper.
In the dying seconds, a swift break saw the ball squared accross the home box. Ben arrived in the right place, at the right time to knock the ball home. 6-0!
The final whistle went- what a fantastic victory for the boys!
Many thanks to the St Michaels team and staff for holding the match.
